HAPPY Thanks Living!

So many cool things have been going on and this month.  Where do I start?  My daughter’s birthday, which is a reason to be grateful, the weather begins to cool down here in Arizona, and the Issue Challenge (the other challenge I do every week at Club CK) is celebrating its second birthday!  I love that. I have ISSUED 104 challenges and each one has seen multiple people rise to the challenge I know over a 1,000 layouts have been done from those challenges!  That makes me so happy!

This month, we are talking about a spooooky design principle…OK maybe not spooky but it fit with the typical “October” feel of spooky. I actually had this challenge slated for a different month but changed it because it “fit” October so well.  We are going to talk about a great impactful design principle called
BLEEDING.

I know it sounds funny, but we really do “bleed” on our pages and not just when we poke ourselves with a poky tool.  I am talking about the concept of using or not using margins in your scrapbooking.

If you have ever seen a PowerPoint presentation you have probably been exposed to the concept of “bleeding” in graphic design.  Much like other forms of graphic design, bleeding an element on a page is a simple and EFFECTIVE tool for scrapbooking.

Bleeding is anytime you use an image or element in your design that touches the edge of your page (digital or paper).  The designer will leave no margin at all and can even extend beyond a defined border.  Bleeding is not only used as a large element, scrapbook and card designers use it often on small elements within the primary plane.  (Typically your foundation cardstock is your primary plane.)

Why do you suppose that is so effective?

Your eye will travel across the bleed looking for more information. The bleed is very esthetically pleasing and will cause the reader to be drawn into the work.

How bleeding can help:

  • With photos bleeding can give a sense of motion.
  • Bleeding can help to create a bridge in a two-page layout
  • Bleed can add intrigue to an element placed on a layout, leaving the brain to investigate further the area in which the bleed has been placed (this is often seen in layering)
  • Bleeds fill space, and often used in conjunction with overlapping (of title or sentiment) tie the layout or card together and bring unity.
  • Bleed add deep visual interest to a project and can be a way to set a defined visual hierarchy with the photo being a strong foundation.
  • Bleed can distribute weight on a layout

Many advertisers use full-bleed pages to give a sense completeness and a rich effect.

Try using a bleed on your next project and post it here. I see many great ideas in this month’s magazine and I would encourage you to take a peek into PaperCrafts Magazine, the sister magazine to Creating Keepsakes for great inspiration. I often find great inspiration for my layouts in PaperCrafts.  This month I would love to see you incorporate your Thanks Living Statements along with the concept of bleeding.

Be Blessed Friends!

TRUE! Like Robyn I have done this process a few times and not know there was a design principle associated with it! I love your bleeding techniques explained in detail and shown off to effect with your awesomely bled out LO! can't wait to create for this! Thanks Erika!

Now your comment regarding the LO I posted last month makes so much more sense Big Smile. I didn't realize that was a design principle at all. Guess I just have a "feel" for it. Hope I can do it intentionally, on purpose now that you have challenged me to. Will have to think on this a bit (or just take a LO I don't mean to and end up with bleeding, then post it here).

I think I "got it" - the ribbon and border at the bottom bleed past the focal pp, and the ribbon at the top bleeds to the end.  I also have 2 clusters of embellies.  The journaling is tucked in behind the little tag.  It's been dark and rainy here for days, so the pic is not as nice as I'd like.

Here's mine... http://clubcreatingkeepsakes.com/media/p/1014368.aspx.  I found this picture of my son in separate folder on my computer right after I posted about this newsletter so, I knew I had to do this layout.  The photo had no date so, I looked through my portfolio and the photo/design was from 2006 and the magazine....Pack-O-Fun! (Crafts 'n Things sister publication)  Anyway, gotta love how he posed for me.  The kids were always good sports about things like that.

My layout uses sunburst beams to bleed off the page.

A layout I did last week that Erika  pointed out used bleeding, too:

Laurie............I love this LO! Your daughter is beautiful!  Would love to lift the LO but will not come out like yours.

This seriously warmed my evil little heart and caused Mom tears! Kayde was trying to get ready for his 1st Pack Meeting as a Webelos and he was kind of caddywampus. So Conor, who fights with Kayde constantly, walks up unprovoked and nicely says "Here Kayde let me help you, I want you to look nice for your first meeting". He nicely adjusted Kayde's uniform. The look on Kayde's face was look Mom he does like me. I'm very proud of Conor he did the right thing! (more Mom tears)

I didn't wait until the last minute!!!!

This opportunity fell in my lap.  I printed the photos at home and wanted to use them in a timeline progression end to end over the whole page, the bleed.  The foundation PP was busy, so I needed to ground the photos first.  The dark CS wasn't enough, so I matted them on the cream CS too, leaving room for the words. The ballon stickers bleed slightly onto the PP.    I added the little bit of journaling at the last minute and wish I hadn't.  I will go back and cover it up another time.  I did write the whole story separately.  I'm adding it here.  I realized though that I didn't actually write "thankful" anywhere in it, although it's in the writing.

I am thankful you find joy in balloons. I am thankful the balloons lasted so long.  I am truly thankful for the little things.

But since this story is still ongoing (the balloons are still floating as of today) I can add it when I update the blog post where I originally wrote it.

Here is the story that goes with the photos. I made it a companion page, using some of the same elements as the LO.

Devra ~ LOVE this LO! That bg paper is awesome and looks a lot like the mylar balloon. The LO on the first page perfectly illustrates the story that you related on your blog (and I am so happy that you did the companion page with the whole story). AMAZING (and the title was perfect).

http://clubcreatingkeepsakes.com/media/p/949527.aspx - journaling is under the photo - and in my gallery.
Thanks for another super-duper tutorial, Erika! I think this one demonstrates the use of "bleeding". I wanted the butterfly paper to give the impression of "hugging" the photo ... so it seemed natural to cover the entire side of the LO with it.
And the ribbon on this one - http://clubcreatingkeepsakes.com/media/p/1019636.aspx  -"bleeds" across the entire LO:

I put 2 scraps of paper on the edges of my LO to coordinate it with the other layout making it a double.

I know it was just a little bit but I think it helped the second LO a lot. Thanks for these fun challenges! :)
