NSD Countdown/Garage: Take the Scrapbook Organization Challenge!

Greetings, scrapbookers! This week we’re celebrating the week leading up to National Scrapbooking Day 2012 (Saturday, May 5) with the theme “scrapbooking around the house.” Each day we’ll host a variety of activities to get your scrap on, including tips, challenges, and prizes GALORE on both the Creating Keepsakes and Club CK blogs. On Saturday we’ll continue the festivities in both places, and we’ve also teamed up with Big Picture Classes to bring you FREE 12-hour Creative Crop (sign up to reserve your spot today).

As we scrapbook around the house, today we’re visiting the GARAGE. Let’s see how CK Dream Team member  Linda Barber approaches it.

Hey there! Ready for another scrapbooking challenge? How about an scrapbooking organization challenge? I sure could use one, because I'm organizationally challenged! My husband will be happy to tell you about the mess that is my scrap area. But let's not involve him. What we can do is involve his man cave: the garage!  There are so many items in there that could be used for the greater (scrappy) good. Let's take a closer look, shall we?

How about this sorter thingie that's normally used to sort screws, nails, and other small garage-y supplies? I personally think it's even better for loose chipboard shapes, brads, flowers, tags, etc.

Another find from the dark and dank garage? An organizer that can hold a lot of small ink pads! (What? You think I should stop buying ink? You are right, of course!)

Here are a few more items that you can "borrow" from the garage for your scrap room.

Kinsey Wilson got this four-tiered holder, covered it in some yummy woodgrain paper and voilá: her tabletop is all nice and neat, her supplies beautifully organized.

Let's not forget that we can always turn to the queen of organization herself, Martha Stewart. The Apartment Therapy blog lists seven Martha-like ways to use a pegboard!

Jen Caputo put a pegboard to work in her scrap room, and now her punches and stickers are out so she can see them (and use them!)

Do you have any formerly-garage-supply-now-scrappy-org ideas to share with us? Please do; I could use more help! And here's your challenge for today:

Pick one part of your scrapbooking stash or one area in your scrap space and reorganize it so it makes more sense for you. Be sure to take a "before" pic as well as an "after" photo, then share links to your photos in the comments below for a chance at a prize.Check out today's post on the CK blog and the Creating Keepsakes "Organization" Pinterest board for even more inspiration.

Oops, I edited the instructions to reflect the fact that this challenge is just before/after pics, not a layout.

I chose to work on getting my ribbons better organized. Still not through but I will be finishing up (hopefully) all of them on my upcoming long trips. Two the rest of this month. I love to have something like this to do while traveling.

I'm so happy to finally have my extra photos organized in a way that will actually encourage to use them. I used Stacy Julian's method, its amazing to cross date boundries and focus on relationships that span the years! Thanks Club CK and Stacy! I use an old wooden cassette case for my ink pads and a basket for my mists.  Problem is that they were just sitting on a table (my son's former changing table repurposed).  As part of my NSD weekend, I got my husband to get them on the wall for me so I actually have a worktable to use for my Big Shot/Cricut now.  yay!  I also use a small tacklebox to carry small items to scraps and a full-sized toolbox when I need to carry lots of paper and full stamp sets.  The Caramel/Sea Salt Bark box under the cassette rack holds my Tim Holtz distress ink bottles.  One day I'll decorate it.  maybe.

Linda's ink box really got me inspired.  I needed a better way to transport my chalks and inks to a crop that didn't take up much space.  I can't take all of my ink pads, sprays and art stash with me so I wanted to get a small "bare bones" way to take some of these supplies with me.  If you look at the "before" picture you can see that I was in really dire shape.  I am so happy that you posted this challenge!  Thank you, Linda!

Here's my part of the organization challenge!  I like it already...no more splatters and (fingers crossed) air bubbles.

This is one of those holders for screws and bolts I got for my hubby at Walmart. He didn't want it right away, so I have put it to use!!

I used to keep all my die cuts in various baggies, and despite repeated attempts to organize them I could never find anything. Finally, prompted by the challenge i mentioned to my hubby that I would raid the garage section of our local hardware store and he suggested I go with him to Walmart. And lo and behold, in the outdoor / automotive section, there was this awesome big box that had tons of dividers... and now all my extra die cuts are organized in alpha order!! This worked so well I am planning to go back and get a few different sizes to finish the process.

Ok, didn't use anything from the garage, but I repurposed my paper sorter and use it for those little scraps now instead of the big sheets, which I put between the sorters. This is after.
