Tools organization quiz

Tools can be a blessing and a curse to the scrapbooker--we love what they can help use do, but when they overtake our workspace, they can keep us from getting anything done. Use your answers from the quiz below to determine which tools you cannot live without, which you only use once in a while, and which you can part with.

Understanding how you use your tools helps you come up with an effective way to organize and store them. For example, if you use your scissors, adhesive, and ruler on every layout you make, keep them together in an easy-to-access bin on the top of your workspace. The next time you sit down to scrapbook, you'll have your essentials ready to go!

If you aren't sure of your answers to the questions below, scrapbook a few pages and pay attention to the tools you use for every page. Or look through some of your most recent layouts and projects to see which tools you used the most.

1. What do you consider to be your essential tools? List the tools you use every time or nearly every time you scrapbook.

2. Are there tools that you don't use as much but that you still enjoy? List these less-essential tools.

3. Now take a look at the rest of your tools. Be honest-which ones should you kick to the curb because haven't used them in years?

4. Are there any tools that are large, bulky, or unattractive that you'd like to hide away? Which ones?

5. Do you prefer your favorite tools to be visible and within reach when you're working, or do you prefer a clean and uncluttered workspace?

6. Are there any other considerations you need to make in terms of workspace for your tools? For example, are there tools that need to remain out because they're too heavy or cumbersome to hide away?

7. Do you own any tools that would be easiest to use a standing counter-height work surface? Where are they?

1. My most essential tool is my paper trimmer, and glue. Always the closest to me, within easy reach! LOVE my pens, markers, inks, use them every time.

2. My Fiskarsfinger tip knife isn't used that much but whenever I need a straight blade, it's the one I pull out. My Cricut isn't used every time but I sure do love it when I do use it. Stamps are not used but about every 10th project. Chalks. Pencils.

3. My circle cutter by Memory in the Making, Sizzex Big Shot ( only use when I want to emboss, but could live with out it ) Just about every plastic template I own. My eyelet setter, hate eyelets now.

4. Don't want to hide my Cricut but finding the sace for it is a problem, I hve a storage bag for it but have to pull it out each time I need it.

5.uhmmm..both? My workspace is clean ( except when I'm working, duh! ) but my tools are on rolling carts so they are within easy reach!

6. the Cricut...needs to be left out, it's a pain to bring out every time. One of the resons I don't like my Sizzex is that its so heavy, the dies are cumbersome to store too.

7. I don't have a work surface at that height.

2. glaze, chalk, ink, stamps

3. ???? not really sure that I would want to get rid of anything

4. Sizzix, Sizzix tower with dies and all the dies in a box

5. I like things visible, but tidy..although you can't tell it right now!

1. My essential tools are my ATG gun, my MM paper trimmer, my scissors and my CM trimmer. There are also a select few pens I most often use. SO I keep those handy.

2. My little sewing kit is a favorite. I also love my cricut.

3. I have decorative edge scissors which I loathe to throw out, but really never use.

4. I wish I had a better spot for my lareg MM trimmer. I just hid my cricut in a comput5. Do you prefer your favorite tools to be visible and within reach when you're working, or do you prefer a clean and er cabinet. I found it fit well on the spot designated as a printer sheld.

5. I would like a clean uncluttered work space, though it's difficult to do given i can't afford all of the organizational things I want to buy. It's happening slowly but surely.

6. Hiding my trimmers would be nice. Finding ways to hide things in my dining room work spave would be awesome.

7. My MM trimmer would work well on a counter top surface.

1. What do you consider to be your essential tools? List the tools you use every time or nearly every time you scrapbook.

My straight edge trimmer, glue, scissors, gypsy and Cricut Expression.

2. Are there tools that you don't use as much but that you still enjoy? List these less-essential tools.

Zutter-Bind it all and Cuttlebug...oh and my Big bite. I don't use it much anymore, but still ove it when I need to.

3. Now take a look at the rest of your tools. Be honest-which ones should you kick to the curb because haven't used them in years?

My YourStory...I haven't ever used it to bind something but have laminated with it. I have told myself I will use it this year. We will see.

4. Are there any tools that are large, bulky, or unattractive that you'd like to hide away? Which ones?

My little photo printer, Zutter and Cuttlebug. My cardstock and scrap paper are in plastic containers that I carry in my rolling tote when I travel to crops and when they aren't being used at home they are hidden in there.

5. Do you prefer your favorite tools to be visible and within reach when you're working, or do you prefer a clean and uncluttered workspace? I have to have my Cricut and Gypsy within arms reach at all times, but they have a rack they stay on in my scrap corner in my bedroom, not on my work space.

6. Are there any other considerations you need to make in terms of workspace for your tools? For example, are there tools that need to remain out because they're too heavy or cumbersome to hide away? I have a corner desk in my room where I work from home at daily on one side and scrapbook from on the other so I have a little hand tote with all my basic supplies in it that sits on the corner of my scrap side and a cutting mat that stays out all the time on the work surface, but other than that the rest of my goodies all have homes in a cube/grate system I have in there as well. I like organization, I work better that way. I just finally found this system last year and LOVE it.

7. Do you own any tools that would be easiest to use a standing counter-height work surface? Where are they? No I don't own any like that.

3. Now take a look at the rest of your tools. Be honest-which ones should you kick to the curb because haven't used them in years? shape stencils, eyelets--brads definitely replaced them!

4. Are there any tools that are large, bulky, or unattractive that you'd like to hide away? Which ones? the largest thing I have is my cricket.

5. Do you prefer your favorite tools to be visible and within reach when you're working, or do you prefer a clean and uncluttered workspace? visible and handy--reminds me to use them!

6. Are there any other considerations you need to make in terms of workspace for your tools? For example, are there tools that need to remain out because they're too heavy or cumbersome to hide away? my printer--I wish I could put my table in the center of the room like other scrapbook rooms.

7. Do you own any tools that would be easiest to use a standing counter-height work surface? Where are they? My table is counter-height, so everything is that level when I use them:)

1.  Trimmer, scissors, pens, adhesive roller, brad setter (WRMK),

2.  Cricut, Crop-A-Dile, corner punches, heat gun, stamps, sticker maker (Xyron)

*I love my Cricut & my Xyron and even though I don't use them on every LO, it's pretty close!*

3.  Funky edge scissors, I should use them more though - they're cool!

4.  I don't want to have to hide anything away, but my scrap space is also my dining room, so I have to put everything away when I'm done.

5.  I wish I could leave it all out! Ahh, someday when I have my own room!

6. & 7.  Again, no choice for where my tools go!  =)

1. Trimmer, scissors, adhesive (esp my xyrons), ruler, craft knife, paper piercer.

2. Xyron die cutting machine, Sizzix DCM, Sizzix texture boutique, heat gun, ribbon iron, stapler, punches (esp edge punches).

3. The MM tagmaker. My notching tool. My rotary cutter (which i thought i would love...used it much more often in my old house....)

4. No, everything is pretty well set. Though that rotary cutter is rather bulky. I really need to use it more!!

5. 50-50 on the visible, depends on the tool. but i have to (and actually pretty much do) have everything within reach.

6. I have an old wheely kitchen cart that is my "cutting station" - it has my sizzix machines and my xyron dcm and my rotary cutter. So I'm pretty fortunate to have that space for them. The irony is that I use all of those items EXCEPT for the rotary cutter FAR MORE FREQUENTLY in this space than in my old house!

7.All the stuff on my cart. but it's counter height so it works out pretty well!

1.  Paper trimmer, Cricut, scissors, inks, pens and adhesives.

2. Cinch binder, Sizzix, rubber stamps and punches.

3. Eyelets and the setter tool.  Never really liked pounding those in!!

4. I like to keep my big machines out...that way, I use them more.  I ended up making matching covers for my sewing machine, serger and Cricut... just need to make one for my Cinch.  I'm also considering making one for my Sizzix.  Eventually, my table will be skirted in the same fabric to hide the "goodies" underneith.

5.  I have a few tools on my work table.  Most are in labeled drawer units within reach when I'm working.  In my old studio, I had everything out and dusting the room weekly was a chore...plus, having things in cabinets and drawers cuts down on the visual clutter.

6. My sewing machine/desk and serger stay out.  Cricut stays out because I use it daily.

7. I don't have any counter-height work surfaces in my studio.

1. What do you consider to be your essential tools? My rotary paper trimmer, adhesives (Xyron, ATG and tape runners), Cricut, Gypsy and Cricut tools.

2. Are there tools that you don't use as much but that you still enjoy?  Heat gun for embossing, Cuttlebug, Crop-a-dile, Hole punches.

3. Now take a look at the rest of your tools. Be honest-which ones should you kick to the curb because haven't used them in years?  I only use my comb-binder occasionally and the fastenator.

4. Are there any tools that are large, bulky, or unattractive that you'd like to hide away? Which ones?  I made a dust cover for my Cricut which makes it more attractive to me.  My sewing machine is hiding behind the TV because that's the only place it fits and it's heavy when I pull it down.

5. Do you prefer your favorite tools to be visible and within reach when you're working, or do you prefer a clean and uncluttered workspace?   I like everything visible and within reach but I added a scrap table so I could have an uncluttered area to spread out in.

6. Are there any other considerations you need to make in terms of workspace for your tools? It's working for now (except the sewing machine).

7. Do you own any tools that would be easiest to use a standing counter-height work surface? Where are they?  I have a small space and can't stand for long periods of time so I'd rather keep things at chair level.

1. Basics...ATG, paper piercer, tweezers, scissors, paper trimmer.

2. I don't use my punches as often as I could, but I wouldn't part with them.

3. I hardly ever use my Silent Setter since I got my Crop-A-Dile...but I hang on to it because it does allow me to set eyelets in the middle of a page.

4. I keep my heat gun in the closet & punches behind the door...don't know that I really want them out.

5. The tools & supplies that I use most frequently are within easy reach.

6. I'd love a better spot for my Cricut, but it's satisfactory for the moment.

7. My paper trimmer & my Cricut...the paper trimmer is counter-height, but there's not enough room for the Cricut.

Cuttlebug, Cricut Expression, acrylic stamps.

3. Now take a look at the rest of your tools. Be honest-which ones should you kick to the curb because haven't used them in years?

Sixxix die cut machine and die cuts.

4. Are there any tools that are large, bulky, or unattractive that you'd like to hide away? Which ones?

Nope--love them all!

5. Do you prefer your favorite tools to be visible and within reach when you're working, or do you prefer a clean and uncluttered workspace?

Visible and within reach, but still with a clean and uncluttered workspace.

6. Are there any other considerations you need to make in terms of workspace for your tools? For example, are there tools that need to remain out because they're too heavy or cumbersome to hide away?

Yes, my Cricut needs to be hooked up all the time.  I like to leave my Cuttlebug on an open, lower, shelf for ease of accessibility.

7. Do you own any tools that would be easiest to use a standing counter-height work surface? Where are they?

Probably my Cricut and Cuttlebug.  But I don't have a standing counter-height work surface.  The cricut is on my computer desk, and the Cuttlebug is on the floor next to my workspace.

1. Paper Trimmer, Pokey Tool, craft knife and self-healing mat

2. My Cricut , ruler and stamps

3. The Xron design runner thing (the printer.. I think I have used it twice)

4. Nope, but I am lucky I have a big room for scrappin'  I would maybe say my "light box" is put away, but only because it fits in the put away spot, and I don't use it that much

5.I like them up neatly away in a clean orderly, visable way.  Which is how I use them I put stuff away when I am not using it,and thus never have to "look" to find it!  (this makes cropping away from home a bit more challenging!)

6. No like I said, I have a pretty big space (little over 400 sq feet) as a scraproom, so most my stuff is visable and out

7. I have a counter high island in my room so if I need something that high.. I put it on the counter! Works great!  Sometimes I stand and scrap so it's nice to have the option and space to do that

3. Now take a look at the rest of your tools. Be honest-which ones should you kick to the curb because haven't used them in years?  Hmmmm....I think I use all that I have.  Now paper, embellies, etc. -- I have lots I could get rid of.

4. Are there any tools that are large, bulky, or unattractive that you'd like to hide away? Which ones? The Cricut is big and bulky, but not ugly.  And it has to be plugged in and near my computer.

5.visible and within reach

6. Are there any other considerations you need to make in terms of workspace for your tools? For example, are there tools that need to remain out because they're too heavy or cumbersome to hide away?  Cricut by computer is about it.

7. Do you own any tools that would be easiest to use a standing counter-height work surface? Where are they?  My paper trimmer would work that way, and my heat tool.  Cricut too, but it's gotta be by my computer.

1. Tape gun... can't live without it; paper trimmer; liquid glue; ink; stamps

2. stack paper cutter; crop-a-dile; scor-pal and scor-buddy

3. punches; corner rounders; light box; fiskars embosser

4. I have a lot of large and bulky tools but I use them.  Maybe it's because I can see them.

5. Clean ... uncluttered?!  In my dreams :)  If I can see them I have a tendency to use them.  But a lot of times I want to use something and I can't find it.  Like my heat gun.

6. I just need a bigger room because I have too much stuff.  I love my stack cutter which is big and bulky but I love it when I'm making a lot of something.  Couldn't live without it.  I like being able to see things.

7. My stack cutter is on a counter standing height.  My cricut is easy to move so it's on a shelf and is moved to a table when I use it.  Most items I have can be used sitting down.

4. A not really, I'm such a visual person, I need to be able to see everything

5. visisble within easy reach

6. my cricut is the one tool that is hard for me to find a place to keep out.  I hate lugging it out and putting it away, so a couple of weeks ago, I found a little end table and put it next to my paper storage.  We'll see how that works out for me.

3. Now take a look at the rest of your tools. Be honest-which ones should you kick to the curb because haven't used them in years?       cropodile (not really sure how to use it), templates

4. Are there any tools that are large, bulky, or unattractive that you'd like to hide away? Which ones?

Never!  If I hid them away, I would forget to use them!

5. Do you prefer your favorite tools to be visible and within reach when you're working, or do you prefer a clean and uncluttered workspace?

I prefer BOTH - need to have favoriets visible and available but also room to work...:)

6. Are there any other considerations you need to make in terms of workspace for your tools? For example, are there tools that need to remain out because they're too heavy or cumbersome to hide away?

The heavy, cumbersome tools (Cricut and cuddlebug)stay out where they can be used.  Cricut is on chest on one side of my table; Cuddlebug is on dresser on other side of the table.

7. Do you own any tools that would be easiest to use a standing counter-height work surface? Where are they?

The cuddlebug is counter height, easier to turn handle.  Cricut works better for me when I am seated.

Sandie wrote re: Tools organization quiz

1. Fiskars paper trimmer, Xyron, ATG tape gun

2. I don't set eyelets very often, but the eyelet setter is pretty small.  I don't use all my punches all the time, but I do consider them all quite often.  I think the tool I used to use all the time but only use occasionally now would be my stencils.

3. I would have said my stencils, but I actually used them on a layout the other day because I wanted it to match a previous one.

4. My larger Xyrons.  I have the 250, 510, and 900 in addition to the X.  I use them often but they take up a lot of space.  I am able to store extra adhesive (spare boxes) in a cabinet out of sight.  The Cricut also sits out but it is so sleek looking when all closed up that I don't mind it.

5. I prefer my workspace to be completely uncluttered.  I can't work on top of other work on top of other work, altho when I get carried away and start several ideas at once, well, they do pile up.  However, I never leave my studio until it is as tidy as I can get it.  (It also protects my work from five wandering cats!)

6. Yes, the Cricut is out because it is heavy and because it requires a plug.  My new Fiskars paper trimmer is 12" wide and folds in half for storage, but it's really too thick to fit in the drawer comfortably, so I leave it out.  I leave my most used tools in a spinning bucket type carousel that has a fabric overlay with many pockets.  That is really too big for my space, but I haven't found something to replace it other than to put it all away in the drawers near me.  Somehow, since I have such a great set up with many small drawers for supplies, etc, I'm thinking about putting them back to regain tabletop space.

7. Tools at tabletop height would be my punches and the QuicKutz.  I always have to stand up to use them and put some weight into the punches, but then that means I'm leaning over which is bad for my arthritic spine.  It would be nice to raise some space up - maybe 2 feet square?.

Now I'm going to read everyone else's responses and see what they said!

4. Are there any tools that are large, bulky, or unattractive that you'd like to hide away? my sewing machine. But I would still like it handy.

5. Do you prefer your favorite tools to be visible and within reach when you're working, or do you prefer a clean and uncluttered workspace? I like my surface uncluttered. However, with the limited work space and storage space I have I have to keep my most used tools on my work surface at all times.

6. Are there any other considerations you need to make in terms of workspace for your tools? For example, are there tools that need to remain out because they're too heavy or cumbersome to hide away? my sewing machine. I have to keep it out all the time. It doesn't have a home so to speak. It sits under my work table when not in use. I kick it all the time and hurt my piggies...LOL

7. Do you own any tools that would be easiest to use a standing counter-height work surface? Where are they? my MM paper trimmer. It's pretty big and using at a standing height would probably make a whole lot easier. my problem is space. I don't have any to add standing tables and what not.

4. Are there any tools that are large, bulky, or unattractive that you'd like to hide away? Which ones?

Bulky = Totes

5. Do you prefer your favorite tools to be visible and within reach when you're working, or do you prefer a clean and uncluttered workspace?    Visible and Uncluttered means I am not being creative!

6. Are there any other considerations you need to make in terms of workspace for your tools? For example, are there tools that need to remain out because they're too heavy or cumbersome to hide away?  Cricuts, Silhouette, Slice, Cuttlebug, Desktop PC and Printer.

7. Do you own any tools that would be easiest to use a standing counter-height work surface? Where are they?   Not really, I prefer to sit on a swivel, rolling stool.

I have 4 rolling carts w/drawers for unfinished projects, paper collections, themes, etc.  They are really handy.  I also have storage cubes stacked together.  I would really like a wall of shelves above my worktable, starting from the bottom with frequently used tools and on up to seldom used but need occasionally tools.
